Step Pyramid at Sakkara
Since prehistoric times, the ancient Egyptians had always believed in eternal life after death and this belief was associated with their growing skill of the preservation of the dead bodies known as mummification as they also believed that the physical corpse of the deceased would have been part of the eternal life. The design of their tombs was an essential part in the whole process. It started with a pit in the desert covered with sand and the dead body was buried in a contracted position, then the grave stone or the super structure was in the form of Ben Ben which is semi conical in shape that developed into the Step Pyramid at Sakkara at about 2700 B.C. by the genius architect Imhotep who is considered to be the architect that was firstly mentioned in history. That was at the reign of king Zoser, the founder of the third Dynasty, this Pyramid was built of limestone and its structure consists of 6 steps with original height of about 60 m.
Pyramid of Unas
Pyramid of Unas is less known pyramid but very important and represents a milestone in Ancient Egyptian Pyramids as it is the first pyramid that ever had inscriptions on its inner walls known as the Pyramid Texts that were the oldest recorded religious and funerary texts in history. The Pyramid of Unas dates back to about 2350 B.C. in the time of the Fifth Dynasty (Old Kingdom) and originally rose to about 43 m high, but many Old Kingdom pyramids were dismantled on systematic basis to be reused in other buildings in the time of the New Kingdom.
Pyramid of Teti
Pyramid of Teti was erected at about 2300 B.C. at the reign of king Teti in the time of the Sixth Dynasty (Old Kingdom), it is the second pyramid known to have Pyramid Texts on its inner walls after the Pyramid of Unas. Pyramid of Teti originally rose to about 52 m high but almost completely damaged above the ground (super structure) but in an excellent state of preservation under the ground (substructure).
Museum of Imhotep
Imhotep was the vizier of king Zoser in the Third Dynasty at about 2700 B.C. (Old Kingdom), he was an exceptional man in the history of mankind as so far he is considered the architect that was mentioned in history for first time and it is attributed to him the building of the Step Pyramid at Sakkara that is the oldest building made of stone to be completed in history. Imhotep was also famous in Medicine that he was deified in the Greek Period, he was associated the Greek god of Medicine, Asclepios.
Kagemni tomb
The tomb of Kagemni was erected in the form of mastaba, it dates back to the Sixth Dynasty in the time of the Old Kingdom during the reign of king Teti (about 2300 B.C.). Kagemni was the son-in-law and Vizier of king Teti. this tomb is a large tomb measuring 32x32 m and depicts reliefs in an excellent condition showing daily life scenes and ancient Egyptian symbols such as Ankh, Egyptian symbol for life.
