The church was founded as early as the 3rd century.
Cave Church in Cairo
You would also visit the Saint Simon monastery. It is also known as the cave church of Zabaleen. It has many churches that were built in caves. There is the Saint Simon the Tanner Hall and St. Mark's Church. Both churches are in a cave. The top story is the Saint Simon Tanner Hall. It can house up to 2000 worshipers at the same time. The lower story is Saint Mark's church. The church is named after saint mark the first preacher in Egyptian history. In the monastery also lies the cathedral of the Virgin Mary and Saint Simon, the Tanner. It is the biggest in the monastery.
